3D modelling researcher

You explore new methods to automatically extract relevant information from a 3D model. You launch innovation in manufacturing design processes.

Designs of intelligent machines, vehicles and assembly systems are becoming increasingly complex. Here at Flanders Make, we explore new ways to ensure designers can make efficient design choices. In upcoming research projects, we will use 3D modelling capabilities (i.e. CAD drawings) to improve the process from design to manufacturing. In concrete industrial cases of companies, we will look for ways to identify information that will become important in later design stages such as manufacturability, assemblability, recyclability, etc.

Bridge academic knowledge on 3D modelling towards prototype software & proof-of-concepts

As an expert or young potential in 3D modelling:

  • you work together in a team that combines expertise in software, mechanical and mathematical engineering;
  • you perform research, together with the team, into how 3D models can be used to improve design processes;
  • you focus on developing algorithms based on computational geometry.

For a variety of industrial applications (cooling systems, automotive, compressed air, etc.), you will:

  • Propose different methodologies to analyse and manipulate the 3D model in different representations (such as B-REP, CSG, NURBS...);
  • Discuss with your peers how to redefine and solve the industrial problem statement with a mathematical approach;
  • Develop algorithms (MATLAB, python) and improve your method(s);
  • Collaborate with our industrial partners in close contact with commercial Computer Aided Design (CAD) software providers and manufacturing companies;
  • Code and prototype software (Python, C++) as a proof-of-concept of the developed solutions.

Mathematical background and insight in 3D - geometry

You have

  • A PhD diploma in Engineering (Computer Science or Mechanics) or Mathematics (Applied Mathematics) or another relevant domain;
  • A track record in the field of solid 3D modelling with a strong mathematical background, especially in computational geometry;
  • Experience in developing complex algorithms and software, preferably in C++ and Python;
  • Affinity with mechanical design and CAD software tools is a plus;
  • A keen interest in applied research and the ambition to push the limits of the current state of practice with innovative developments.

You are

  • Passionate about research challenges and able to think out-of-the-box;
  • Capable to formalise mathematical problems and propose solutions by using critical thinking;
  • Result-oriented, responsible, self-directing and a team player;
  • A good communicator, open and honest;
  • Eager to learn and share knowledge with your peers.

Experienced researchers will also coach young researchers and have the possibility to lead projects.
