Flanders Make

Object Detection and Pose Estimation using Deep Learning

Flanders Make

Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.

Goal of the internship

This internship is focused in the study of different methods used for object detection/pose estimation. The internship involve an analysis of state-of-art available methods/software in academia and industry. The detection of objects and estimating their 6D pose from a data streams is nowadays a popular challenge specially when no markers are used.
The expected outcome is a real-time object detection and 6D pose estimation of at least three different objects visible in the scene.

During this internship the focus for the object detection and 6D pose estimation will be set toward object usually found in industrial controlled environment (such as: hammer, screw, glue gun, ... ).
Multiple vision sensors will be made available during the internship (2D and depth). During this internship, after the state of art study you will have to collect and annotate data of pre-selected objects to be detected. Then, implement, apply and benchmark the selected approaches to perform the full 6D pose estimation. For the object detection part, one of the available and pretrained neural network (e.g. Yolov3 or ResNet) will be used.

Profile Student

  • Bachelor degree in control engineering;
  • Knowledge of adaptive or learning control design and experience with Matlab/Simulink is highly recommended;
  • Passionate by research and new technologies with focus on applications for machines or mechatronic systems of the companies;
  • Result oriented, responsible and proactive;
  • A good communicator, able to communicate in English;
  • Eager to learn and a team player.

Only EEA or Swiss nationals can be accepted for internships due to work permit regulations.

Practical Data

This assignment is an internship but can also be executed by a thesis student from a Belgian university.

The assignment is for min 4 month to maximum 6 months and takes place at the offices of Flanders Make offices located in Leuven, Belgium.
