Development of a HiL environment for a rear twin clutch system

Flanders Make

Flanders Make is the strategic research centre for the manufacturing industry. Our mission is to strengthen the long-term international competitiveness of the Flemish manufacturing industry. That’s why we work together with SMEs and large companies on pre-competitive, industry-driven technological research, resulting in concrete product and production innovation in the vehicle industry, the manufacturing industry, and production environments.

Goal of the internship

New automotive systems are complex devices and have shifted to multidisciplinary mechatronics systems. For example differentials have been moved from purely mechanical devices allowing to have two different road speeds on the same axle when turning to active devices that are able to distribute the engine torque (torque vectoring) to achieve certain vehicle behavior during cornering. The topology of such new devices can be addressed on three main levels:

  • High level control input
  • Low level controller
  • Actuators

At Flanders Make we continuously want to improve components that impact system behavior. Within this project we want to understand the different techniques that are used in such active differentials. This by means of analyzing such an available active differential and developing a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) environment. Next we want to take over the low level controller and evaluate the additional performance between the original and new controlled unit.

Learning target:

  • The working principles of an active differential from the mechanical (actuators, clutch mechanics) and software (controls) point of view;
  • How to control mechatronics systems through models in Simulink coupled with real-time simulation systems in a HiL environment;
  • To develop controls for mechatronics systems based on simulation and consequently test these controls on actual physical systems.

Profile of the student

  • Bachelor Degree in computer sciences, electrical, control or mechatronic engineering;
  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink and/or Python is required.
  • Knowledge of electronics hardware (Camera/Lidar/NAS/Nvidia GPU) and experience with electronic tinkering is recommended;
  • Knowledge of Linux, ROS and C++ is a plus.
  • Passionate by research and new technologies with focus on applications for autonomous driving and robotics
  • Result oriented, responsible and proactive;
  • A good communicator, able to communicate in English;
  • Eager to learn and a team player.

Additional information:

  • Internship: Only EEA or Swiss nationals can be accepted for internships due to work permit regulations.
